Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’ has taken the box office by storm. The nearly three-hour epic topped charts over the weekend, raking in approximately $124.5 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada. This significant achievement highlights Nolan’s unique appeal as a director.
The film translates Homer’s 3,000-year-old poem into an instant blockbuster, emphasizing its success. ‘The Odyssey’ stands as the first commercial film shot entirely in IMAX, which contributed to its high sales figures from Thursday to Sunday, according to Rentrak, a film data service. It ranks as the biggest opening of the year for a live-action film in the domestic market. For 2026, it reaches third place, following ‘Toy Story 5’ with $160 million, and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ at $132 million.
PostTrak, a film industry research service, found that the majority of ticket buyers cited Nolan’s involvement as the primary purchasing motivation. The ensemble cast, which includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, and Tom Holland, also played a significant role in attracting audiences.
IMAX contributed about 24% of the film’s opening total. AMC Entertainment, the largest theater operator globally, optimized ticket sales by providing 70-millimeter IMAX screenings at unusual hours such as 2 a.m., 3 a.m., and 6 a.m. in several cities to accommodate demand, and most shows sold out. Rich Gelfond, IMAX’s chief executive, confirmed the strong performance by noting the high volume of presales weeks in advance.
