Explosion Incident Outside Federal Building in Manhattan

An incendiary device exploded outside a federal building in Lower Manhattan on Monday morning, leading to the arrest of a suspect, according to police sources. The event occurred at 26 Federal Plaza, which hosts various agencies such as the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Authorities responded quickly to the explosion, heading toward the building’s entrance. They encountered a man equipped with an airsoft rifle, carbon dioxide cartridges, halogen lighting, and a helmet, as revealed by multiple law enforcement sources.

Senior security sources informed CBS News that initially, the explosion was traced back to fireworks in a garbage can.

The fire department managed the flames, and police took a man into custody. Reports indicate the incident was an anti-ICE attack. Observers noted heavy smoke outside the building after the fireworks detonated.

The suspect reportedly had two guns resembling BB guns or airsoft guns. One of these was a long gun, carried in a grocery cart, as identified by law enforcement sources.

A preliminary inquiry found no shots were fired during the incident. Video footage from the site displayed significant smoke and the suspect being arrested. Following the episode, police warned of traffic delays, disruptions in mass transit, and road closures near Worth Street and Lafayette Street, advising the public to avoid the vicinity.
