France Records Over 5,700 Excess Deaths During Historic Heat Wave

France experienced a severe heat wave this summer, resulting in more than 5,700 excess deaths. Public Health France reported these findings on Wednesday, marking the highest heat-related toll in over 20 years.

Excess Deaths During the Heat Wave

The agency projected 15,910 deaths between June 17 and July 2 but recorded 21,674. The discrepancy of 5,764 excess deaths was 36% above expectations. Temperatures exceeded 104 degrees Fahrenheit in various regions.

An unprecedented event in its early onset, intensity, and duration exposed nearly everyone to extreme heat during a period still largely focused on school and work activities.

Tourists sought relief at public fountains in Paris, highlighting the oppressive conditions. Deaths across hospitals, homes, and nursing facilities rose significantly. The analysis covered ages 15 and older, with mortality increasing from age 45. Seniors aged 75 and above accounted for about two-thirds of the excess deaths, over 3,719 individuals.

Regional Impact and Historical Context

The Paris area faced the most significant impact, with 1,999 excess deaths, over 80% more than expected. Public Health France noted that 2026 experienced the highest heat wave-linked excess mortality since 2003, with roughly 15,000 additional deaths above normal levels.

On June 24 and 25, the highest temperatures occurred, averaging 86 degrees Fahrenheit nationwide. More than half of the excess deaths happened during the peak heat from June 25 to June 27. The event led to over 10,000 excess deaths across Europe, with numbers subject to revisions.

A surge in deaths overwhelmed Parisian funeral services, filling mortuaries and causing some to refuse new arrivals. Officials emphasize that the figures include all-cause mortality during the heat wave and are preliminary, pending further updates.
