Chicago’s Longest-Running Dinner Theater and More

After 31 years, the comedic gangsters and 1920s flappers revue show, known as “Chicago’s longest-running audience-interactive dinner theater,” concluded its run at “Tommy Gun’s Garage” in Chicago’s South Loop due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pat Pohrte, a 2007 Munster High School graduate, was one of the long-standing cast members, known as “Bugsy.” He aimed to continue the tradition of entertainment and dining from the Roaring 20s.

The show’s creators, Larry and Sandy Mangen, approved Pohrte and his business partner Mark Virkler, former co-star “Rocco,” to launch a similar speakeasy-themed dinner show. Joined by David Simmons, who reprised his role as “Muscles,” they opened a new venue in Jefferson Park, Chicago, at 5901 W. Lawrence Ave., previously Galvin’s Public House.

For one evening, Pohrte will host the speakeasy show in Northwest Indiana. On Thursday, July 23, 60 guests are invited to Beatniks on Conkey in Hammond. The 7:15 p.m. show will offer themed “mocktails” for purchase. The admission fee is $25 at the door. “Come step back to 1920’s Chicago and enjoy an evening with Vito Valentino and his mugs and molls, as they transport you to an era where gangsters and flappers reigned supreme,” Pohrte said.

Gordon Ramsay’s Show Sparks Reaction

Following the recent premiere of “Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares,” Freddy’s Steakhouse in Hammond, showcased for improvement, responded to the episode’s portrayal with a statement on Facebook for its 8,000 followers. They described the experience as challenging but recognized the benefits.

“Watching Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares was tough seeing some of the commentary and (owner) Jim getting beat up by Chef Ramsay! A lot of what was shown was for show but truthful, too. Freddy’s puts out a great meal with reasonable pricing compared to other steak houses. Owners Jim and Tammy work hard and give back to the community,” the statement read.

They acknowledged the daily challenges faced in the restaurant industry, including staffing, food costs, and regulations. The owners, Jim and Tammy, were praised for their efforts and commitment to their community, friends, and family.

Valparaiso Resident on “Jeopardy!”

Grace Biermann from Valparaiso appeared on “Jeopardy!” this week. Starting her journey on July 21, she correctly answered the “Final Jeopardy Challenge” about the Cuban Missile Crisis, amassing $32,000 in winnings. Biermann, a 2021 graduate of Valparaiso University, currently works as a library science instructor.

Her victory was short-lived, as she faced defeat on July 22 against Ryan Dean, who correctly responded to a question about “Blue Danube,” winning $22,400. For more information on the show, visit www.jeopardy.com.
