An armed man near the White House was apprehended by the Secret Service after a security breach. The suspect, who began firing, wounded a child with his gunfire before the Secret Service intervened.
In another development, a U.S. Secret Service agent, part of Vice President JD Vance’s detail, faces an investigation over claims of leaking sensitive information. “A member of the Vice Presidential Protective Division is the subject of an administrative investigation, and potential criminal inquiry, involving allegations of compromising operational and information security,” stated Anthony Guglielmi, Secret Service Chief of Communications.
Guglielmi declined to detail the case but emphasized that any conduct threatening a protectee’s safety is intolerable. This investigation coincides with reported frustrations among agents over Vance’s last-minute travel plans, which reportedly caused disruptions due to unplanned scheduling.
The situation escalated following an MS Now report highlighting frustrations within Vance’s security detail. Vance’s office then canceled a scheduled helicopter flight for his son’s golf lesson, explaining the use of Marine Two intended to reduce burden and inconvenience compared to a motorcade. The Trump administration noted the operational efficiency of using the helicopter in a statement to Fox News.
Current and former agents noted prior vice presidents avoided using costly government resources for personal convenience. Agents expressed displeasure at the off-the-record travel, impacting personal schedules and requiring rapid security plans. “The detail is tired of them not giving notice on things and making everything an OTR,” an informed person stated.
A Vance spokesperson conveyed the family’s gratitude to the Secret Service for their services. Deputy Director Matthew Quinn emphasized the dedication involved in ensuring safety while balancing normalcy. Some agents have created custom items like coins and stickers mocking frequent last-minute travel, referencing Vance’s Secret Service code name “Bobcat.” Some coins read, “Bobcat OTR Survivors Club.”
The Trump administration acknowledged the challenges of sudden travel plans, noting Vice President Vance’s active role requires immediate attention unlike previous officeholders. They highlighted his unique diplomatic demands necessitating quick response times.
