Authorities Launch Manhunt for Accused Murderer in Disguise

Criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno provides analysis on the ongoing manhunt for Isabelle Johnson, the woman accused of murdering a 43-year-old man in Florida. Rotunno highlights the suspect’s use of aliases and altered appearances, along with manipulation of accomplices, to elude the Walton County Sheriff’s Department.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has announced new identifying marks on Johnson, warning that she may have changed her hair and appearance as their monthlong search continues. Isabelle Johnson, aged 38, is wanted for the murder of Jason Coulthart. His remains were found buried on a property in Freeport on June 25.

The agency appeals for public tips, stating, “One month of searching for Isabelle Johnson, and our search has not slowed.” Investigators have identified distinctive tattoos on Johnson that may aid public recognition despite her possible attempts at disguise. She is reported to have a tattoo of a rose or flower on her left hand, starting below the thumb and extending toward the index finger. Additionally, Johnson has revealed an unidentified tattoo on her right ankle and a large scorpion tattoo stretching from her left buttock down to her left thigh.

The sheriff’s office suspects Johnson may have dyed and cut her hair to further alter her appearance. Authorities reiterate the numerous aliases Johnson has been linked with, including Harley, Jessica Elaine Bowman, Jessica Elaine Thrush, Jessica Elaine Thrash, Jessica Dowdy, and possibly “Denise.” Johnson is believed to have connections to Walton and Okaloosa counties in Florida, parts of Georgia, and lower Alabama.

Investigators caution that Johnson may manipulate others into providing transport, money, or shelter by fabricating stories of domestic violence or other hardships. Describing Johnson as “cunning” and a “master manipulator,” the sheriff’s office urges anyone assisting her to cease their involvement.

“Every lead is pursued. Every tip is investigated. Every day brings us one step closer,” the agency notes, emphasizing, “Someone knows where she is.” Coulthart was reported missing on May 24 after last being seen leaving College Condominiums on East College Boulevard in Niceville.

Following the missing-person investigation, authorities were led to a property off Sunset Lane in Freeport, where they obtained a search warrant and discovered Coulthart’s body buried in a shallow grave later that evening. DNA testing conducted by the District 1 Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Coulthart’s identity.

The investigation has resulted in five arrests, including Michael Ray White, Kathleen Morris, Bobbi Wagstaff, Martin Leaverton, and Sandra Leaverton, charged with accessory to a capital felony after the fact. White allegedly assisted Johnson in evading law enforcement while Morris reportedly provided transportation and supplies to her and misled investigators.

Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson warns, “If you give her a place to stay, help her hide, or lie for her, you will face consequences. This is a homicide case. We will not allow anyone to get in the way of this investigation.” A reward of up to $16,000 is offered for information leading to Johnson’s arrest.
