Junior running back Jalen Callaway delivered a standout performance for Aurora Christian. Facing Maroa-Forsyth, the Eagles capitalized on a dynamic offense and robust defense, securing a 28-7 victory in a Class 2A second-round playoff game.
The match began with challenges for Callaway. Known for his potent offensive capabilities, Callaway emphasizes the escalating difficulty of playoff games. Yet, he also understands the role of meeting high expectations. “We started slow,” Callaway admitted. “We are a team that shines in the second half. Despite a poor start, it was tied 7-7.” He revealed a personal motivation due to neglect in media coverage. “We aimed to overturn the setback,” he said, and they succeeded.
Callaway made key offensive plays. The Eagles faced a resilient Maroa-Forsyth, holders of back-to-back state runner-up titles, who limited Callaway to 11 first-half rushing yards on seven attempts. Meanwhile, sophomore running back Luke Baumann managed 24 yards on three carries.
Senior right tackle TJ Anderson expressed the team’s dissatisfaction with the halftime score. “We were discontent being tied 7-7. Our offensive line underperformed. We had to overcome our mental barriers after halftime,” he explained. Maroa-Forsyth’s unexpected defensive strategies required adjustments.
In the third quarter, Callaway switched momentum. He received a direct snap and scored a 25-yard touchdown run, giving Aurora Christian a permanent lead. Later, he recovered a bobbled screen pass for a 77-yard touchdown, demonstrating resilience.
The victory propels Aurora Christian to the quarterfinals against Gridley. Callaway reflected on the chaotic catch. “The lights distracted me, yet I seized the opportunity for the team.” Baumann’s interceptions contributed significantly, setting up plays and matching the program’s single-season interception record of eight.
Aurora Christian Coach David Beebe praised the offensive duo’s synergy. “Jalen and Luke offer a formidable double threat,” Beebe stated. The defense shined as well, with junior Carson Moreno intercepting a pass, junior Tucker Lofton leading the pass rush, and senior Chet Morris excelling in coverage.
Beebe highlighted the defense’s stellar performance as integral to the victory. The triumph demonstrates both the offensive and defensive strengths of Aurora Christian as they progress in the playoffs.
