Retelling Stallone’s Journey in ‘I Play Rocky’

Sylvester Stallone’s iconic journey with ‘Rocky’ will be retold in Peter Farrelly’s biographical drama, ‘I Play Rocky.’ The film highlights Stallone’s determination to make ‘Rocky’ a reality. He insisted on playing the lead role, refusing offers to sell his screenplay unless he could act as the titular character.

The trailer features Anthony Ippolito as Stallone, presenting his script to producers. Despite being offered substantial money, Stallone did not concede. Eventually, the producers cast him in the role that transformed his life.

“It was unheard of at the time, especially for someone in Stallone’s economic situation which was dire,” observed film historian Dwight Cleveland. Stallone, then working as a valet attendant, wrote ‘Rocky’ in a mere three days.

Entertainment attorney Tisha Morris noted, “Stallone’s decision was extraordinarily unusual. Most first-time writers would have accepted the money and given up casting control.” Legally, Stallone retained the screenplay and imposed casting conditions, betting his screenplay’s value on his acting.

Gathering insight from film historian Cleveland, Stallone mirrored his character’s confidence, believing his story was a true winner. He held firm, knowing this was his opportunity for stardom both as an actor and author.

Marc Simon, an entertainment attorney at Fox Rothschild, emphasized Stallone’s stance as a classic example in Hollywood history. Stallone rejected substantial offers from producers Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler, demanding to play the lead role himself.

“Stallone bet everything on starring in the film. He owned the property and staked it all for his shot, leaving an indelible mark on cinema and culture,” Simon added.

Ultimately, Stallone’s insistence led to a win-win situation for producers. He accepted a significantly reduced salary, lowering the film’s budget risk. United Artists found the economics feasible, despite an unknown actor leading.

Released in 1976, ‘Rocky’ became a critical and commercial triumph with ten Oscar nominations and three wins, including Best Picture. It launched a successful franchise, solidifying Rocky Balboa as a legendary character in film history.

With Amazon releasing ‘I Play Rocky’ this November, Stallone clarified his lack of involvement. Speaking to The Playlist, he expressed surprise at the project’s existence. In the biopic, Ippolito plays Stallone, and AnnaSophia Robb portrays Stallone’s first wife, Sasha Czack.
