Elijah Bieniemy, the son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been arrested for allegedly shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy, in Ashburn, Virginia. Mia Bieniemy suffered multiple gunshot wounds but is currently in stable condition. In a supportive gesture, Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid expressed his concern for the Bieniemy family following this startling event.
Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders have dismissed tight ends coach Ben Steele following his arrest for a DWI last month. The team confirmed their decision by stating they would part ways with Steele before the start of his first season. The Commanders have chosen not to provide further remarks on the situation at this time.
“The team will have no further comment at this time,” the Commanders said in a statement.
Ben Steele, previously with the Arizona Cardinals, was arrested for DWI and other related charges, including refusing a blood/breath test and obstructing an officer. While the Commanders prepare for their training camp, Wes Welker has stepped in as interim tight ends coach. Steele’s coaching journey began soon after his playing career with the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans from 2004 to 2006.
Steele transitioned to coaching, starting with college football before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014. He served as an offensive quality control coach and later became the tight ends coach in 2017. Steele also worked with the Atlanta Falcons, Vikings, and Broncos over the years.
During Steele’s tenure with the Cardinals, Trey McBride emerged as a standout tight end, earning two Pro Bowl selections and a first-team All-Pro distinction last season. McBride reached a personal best with a 1,239-yard season in 2025, alongside 11 touchdowns. The Commanders, seeking to improve their lineup, signed Chig Okonkwo as part of their tight end group this offseason. Despite a challenging 5-12 record last season, the Commanders aim to regain their competitive edge.
