Debate on Renaming the Gulf of Mexico

A White House representative addressed comments made by John Mellencamp regarding the proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” Mellencamp criticized the idea during concerts on his “Dancing Words Tour.” Videos from his performances in New York and New Jersey show Mellencamp pausing during the song “Pink Houses” to express his disapproval.

While performing in Holmdel, New Jersey, Mellencamp humorously questioned, “Wait a minute. The Gulf of Mexico? Is that right? It’s not the Gulf of America?” He then called the proposal a “stupid” idea. In another show, Mellencamp, aged 74, stopped mid-performance to say, “Wait a minute. Is it really still the Gulf of Mexico? They changed the name of it but I’m not buying it… That’s just not right.”

In response, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle dismissed Mellencamp’s comments. In a statement to The Hill, Ingle remarked, “Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch, woke Hollywood celebrities have to say.”

Mellencamp, who resides in Bloomington, Indiana, since the 1970s, has been known to distance himself from Trump and his policies. In 2017, Mellencamp stated that Trump was “the worst president ever” during an appearance on MSNBC, although he did not directly name Trump. That same year, Mellencamp expressed to Katie Couric that he wouldn’t have performed at Trump’s inauguration, in contrast to his performance at President Barack Obama’s inauguration celebration in 2009. During his interview on MSNBC, he shared his distrust of politicians, regardless of party affiliation. “I trust no politicians. None. Democrat, Republican, Independent—they all have an agenda,” he said.

President Trump had issued an executive order requiring federal agencies to replace the name “Gulf of Mexico” with “Gulf of America.” The House passed a bill to affirm this change, but the Senate has not yet voted on it. Many Democrats and some moderate Republicans opposed the name change, seeing it as a trivial use of resources. However, supporters believed the change would promote national pride. “Names matter,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) in May 2025 on the House floor. She likened the care taken to name a child to the pride embedded in renaming the Gulf.
