Bunia, Congo – The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Health has confirmed 3,262 cases in the ongoing Ebola outbreak, according to a recent update. This figure closely matches the outbreak from 2018 to 2020, which was the largest recorded in the country.
Data from the Congolese Ministry of Health indicates that 1,437 patients have died among the 3,262 cases, describing this outbreak as the fastest known, mainly affecting the eastern province of Ituri.
The 2018-2020 outbreak in Congo and Uganda lasted around two years, with over 3,400 cases and more than 2,200 deaths, as reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The current outbreak spreads rapidly amid concerns over accessibility and security challenges, as teams have withdrawn following attacks by angry residents and rebel groups.
In just 10 weeks, reaching almost the same number of cases as a two-year outbreak is alarming,
said Onesphore Bangenza, head of the Mercy Corps response team in Bunia.
Bangenza noted that the virus is advancing faster than containment efforts. Declared on May 15, this outbreak differs from earlier ones; the Bundibugyo strain involved lacks approved vaccines and treatments.
Efforts to control transmission face obstacles due to rebel violence, healthcare worker strikes over unpaid wages, and a challenge in identifying “patient zero.” Conflict and illegal mining have complicated tracking individuals who had contact with infected persons.
Despite initial distrust, signs of progress are emerging. Fabrice Mumbesa, a resident of Mongbwalu, expressed a change in attitude towards Ebola response teams, We cannot wage war against Ebola response teams anymore,
he stated, noting the community’s loss of family members and the direct interest in combating Ebola to return to normal life.
