President Donald Trump has criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci’s baseball skills again. This comes just hours before Fauci is scheduled to testify before a Senate committee on Wednesday. On Tuesday night, Trump shared a post on Truth Social referencing a clip of Fauci’s poorly executed ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game in July 2020. Trump claimed that Fauci had previously exaggerated his basketball abilities and therefore should have been able to deliver a better throw. Trump described the pitch as the worst he had seen in years, also calling Fauci a terrible athlete.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who previously led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, played a critical role in coordinating the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During Trump’s first term, Fauci and Trump often clashed over Trump’s unproven public health suggestions. Fauci’s testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is scheduled for Wednesday morning, shortly after Senator Rand Paul released numerous pages from Fauci’s diary covering the pandemic period.
Senator Rand Paul has expressed his continuing disagreements with Fauci. He warned on X that a preemptive pardon from President Joe Biden would not protect Fauci if he commits perjury at the hearing. Paul has previously accused Fauci of misleading the public about COVID-19’s origins, an accusation Fauci has consistently denied.
The Diary Entries Reveal
The diary entries released by Senator Paul offer a behind-the-scenes look at the early months of the pandemic. They reveal private debates on the virus’s origins, concerns about public messaging, and differing opinions within the government’s response team. One entry from January 26, 2020, indicates Fauci’s view that the market was not the virus’s source but an amplifier, with the virus jumping from animals to humans somewhere else.
Entries from January 31, 2020, show Fauci discussing with scientists concerns about specific virus features needing further investigation. Researchers focused on the furin cleavage site, a part of the virus crucial for human cell infection, considering whether it was a result of natural evolution or a lab modification. A call on February 1, 2020, with various health experts showed disagreements over virus origin theories.
Senator Paul stated that Fauci publicly claimed COVID-19 originated from a wet market, contradicting his private diary records. Paul insists it’s time to hold Fauci accountable.
Origins of COVID-19 Still Unclear
The official investigation into COVID-19’s origins remains unresolved. A report by a World Health Organization group last year underscored the scientific community’s uncertainty regarding the virus’s origins. While most data supports animal-to-human transmission, a laboratory origin has not been conclusively ruled out. The CIA also suggested a lab origin is possible, albeit with low confidence.
Biden’s Pardon for Fauci?
Before leaving office, President Joe Biden issued preemptive pardons to several individuals, including Fauci, to protect against potential prosecutions from the new administration. Biden emphasized that these pardons did not imply wrongdoing by the recipients.
Trump’s criticisms of Fauci’s baseball abilities date back to October 2020. After Fauci’s wayward Opening Day pitch in July of that year, Trump commented on his own social media about Fauci’s pitching skills being better than his pandemic predictions.
Details About the Upcoming Hearing
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will begin Fauci’s hearing at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. The hearing can be watched live via the C-SPAN or the Senate’s website.
