A couple in Southern California experienced an unexpected birth story when their daughter was delivered in a Jack in the Box parking lot with the assistance of firefighters. Michelle Cisneros and Darren Campbell welcomed their daughter, Valentina Isla Campbell, after realizing they could not reach the hospital in time.
The couple had been heading to the hospital, but stopped at the fast-food location in Orange County and called 911. Their daughter arrived 15 days before the expected due date. Cisneros explained that she initially thought her contractions might be Braxton Hicks. However, as they became more intense and five minutes apart, they decided to head to the hospital.
Michelle Cisneros shared that she had been examined and released twice from a nearby hospital prior to delivering Valentina. At Hoag Hospital, she was monitored but discharged after staff determined there was no change in her cervix. She was advised to return if contractions reached intervals of three minutes. The couple timed the contractions at that interval and returned to the hospital. After another hour of monitoring, she was discharged yet again, despite the pain and given morphine with instructions to continue laboring at home.
Darren Campbell tried to insist on staying at the hospital, citing the frequency of contractions. However, the couple was advised to go home. A few miles from their residence, they stopped at Jack in the Box as Cisneros felt the baby was about to arrive. Emergency responders helped deliver Valentina in the parking lot.
Both parents felt an immense relief when their baby cried. Cisneros reflected on the experience, emphasizing the importance for mothers to trust their instincts and for healthcare professionals to listen to patients. Campbell concurred, stressing the value of self-advocacy in such situations.
The family stayed at the hospital for recovery before returning home. Requests for comments from Hoag Hospital and Jack in the Box were not immediately answered.
