Investigation into Allegations at Michigan Arts School

The Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan has been the focus of a comprehensive investigation into sexual misconduct. Two individuals who attended this prestigious arts institution have come forward with allegations against Jeffrey Epstein, a major donor to the school. These complaints form part of a broader inquiry revealing accusations against nearly 50 individuals affiliated with the school, spanning over decades.

Background of the Investigation

Interlochen operates a summer camp and arts school that attracts students internationally. In 2024, the institution engaged a law firm to investigate abuse claims tied to faculty and staff. The scope of the investigation expanded to include Epstein, an infamous financier who died in jail in 2019.

Following Epstein’s conviction in Florida for sex offenses in 2008, Interlochen removed his name from a lodge and renamed it the Green Lake Lodge. Recently, this building was demolished after the Department of Justice released extensive documentation on Epstein.

Findings of the Investigation

The information gathered during this investigation is, simply put, devastating.

A report by Sanghavi Law Office compiled 70 testimonies from alumni who alleged sexual misconduct involving 47 faculty and staff members from the 1950s through the 2010s, mostly occurring before 2000.

Ex-students recounted experiences of grooming, flirtation, sexual touching, and sexual relationships. Interlochen disclosed these names to Grand Traverse County authorities, though none of the accused are currently employed there. Over a third of these individuals have passed away.

Institutional Response

President Trey Davey and board director Barrett Rollins expressed remorse for the community’s suffering, apologizing to those affected by abuse at Interlochen. They acknowledged that while most incidents happened decades ago and reports have significantly decreased in the past 25 years, time does not diminish alumni experiences.

They emphasized that adult sexual abuse of students is wrong, both historically and now. Interlochen claims to have fundamentally changed, adopting comprehensive safety policies and a transformed culture.

Epstein’s Involvement and Allegations

Epstein attended Interlochen as a camper in 1967, donating over $400,000 between 1990 and 2003. Two women told investigators of Epstein’s inappropriate conduct toward them, including incidents in the lodge bearing his name.

One outlined occasions of Epstein touching her by accident over clothing, and paying for her visits to New York while she was a student. She described feeling paralyzed during inappropriate moments until they ended. Another recalled giving Epstein a massage in his home, which might have involved removing her top, but she never had further contact with Epstein or his partner Ghislaine Maxwell.

Beyond school discovery, two alumni have accused Epstein and Maxwell of grooming and abuse, corroborated by federal records and press reports. One testified against Maxwell during her 2021 conviction for sex trafficking.
