Debate continues on whether NFL players granted extra eligibility should return to college. The NFL recently clarified that players leaving NFL camp for college cannot rejoin the league within the season or be drafted again.
On a segment of “Get Up,” NFL insider Adam Schefter highlighted the unusual crossover between college and professional football. He emphasized, “The rules state that a player leaving the NFL to return to college cannot return that season and loses eligibility for future drafts.”
He provided an example using Donte Whitner, a former safety. “Whitner can’t return to Ohio State after being drafted eighth overall and hope to be a top pick again. The recent memo from the NFL, prompted by the Dae’Quan Wright situation, reaffirms this policy,” Schefter explained.
Dae’Quan Wright, once with the Cleveland Browns, opted to rejoin college with his coach, Lane Kiffin, at LSU. Similarly, Zxavian Harris left the New Orleans Saints for the same opportunity with LSU.
“If you enter the draft, you can’t enter again,” Schefter reiterated. “Deciding to leave for college from the NFL means no return to the league that season.”
The consequences for players like Wright remain unclear. “Many are curious about the impact on Wright’s prospects,” Schefter stated. “The outcomes will become clear over time.”
