WNBA Addresses Social Media Post Involving Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese

The WNBA responded to a social media post depicting stars Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese betting $400 on a game between their teams, calling it a misstep. The league confirmed the players would not face penalties for the bet, a source familiar with the situation shared with The Associated Press under anonymity.

The video, initially shared during the All-Star Weekend, emerged just days before a scheduled matchup between Bueckers’ Dallas Wings and Reese’s Atlanta Dream. The clip showed them engaging in what looked like a personal wager and included the caption, “We did?” followed by a laughing emoji and a reference to their bet on the night’s game.

The WNBA swiftly removed the post after its release and subsequent circulation across social media. A league representative clarified, stating, “Although the social media post was meant to be playful, WNBA players understand the strict league rules against betting on WNBA games, and they receive annual reminders about these standards.”

The statement continued, “We acknowledged the post was inappropriate, promptly took it down, and addressed the matter internally. We will also take this opportunity to remind the players involved that even joking discussions about betting on WNBA games can have unintended repercussions.”

Inquiries to both the Wings and the Dream directed to the league’s statement for comments. According to the collective bargaining agreement, any betting activity is forbidden, and players may face fines, suspensions, or disqualification at the commissioner’s discretion.

On Wednesday, the Dream overcame a 15-point deficit to win against the Wings, finishing 82-81. Reese scored 22 points and secured 12 rebounds, while Bueckers contributed 16 points and six assists.
