President Donald Trump commented on the ongoing conflict with Iran, stating that Americans should brace for continued fighting. He predicted that Iran would eventually weaken as U.S. strikes diminish its ability to retaliate. In response to queries about whether the attacks could persist until Iran’s retaliatory capabilities were exhausted, Trump affirmed his expectation.
During a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump remarked, “They’ll get weaker. They’ll get a little stronger, maybe. But they’ll get weaker, and then they peter out.” His statements indicated an acknowledgment that the five-month conflict might extend, despite assertions of the U.S. military weakening Iran and hopes for a diplomatic resolution.
Trump mentioned, “We’re doing very well. We’re trying to be nice in such a situation, but they’re being decimated.” He emphasized that Iran lacks significant naval and aerial forces, yet acknowledged their limited capabilities.
Complications arise as the fighting contests earlier declarations by the U.S. administration of neutralizing Iran’s military prowess. In April, the White House announced the success of Operation Epic Fury, targeting Iran’s navy and missile capabilities, though Iran continues to launch attacks on U.S. bases and commercial ships.
With the November midterms nearing, the conflict poses political challenges for Trump, particularly regarding explanations for the war’s conclusion. Recent U.S. airstrikes targeted Iranian military sites following Iranian missile attacks, further intensifying the situation.
The renewed conflict follows a collapsed deal from June intended to cease hostilities and restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s assaults on vessels in the waterway reignited hostilities. Trump’s recent remarks revealed a shift in tone, expressing decreased confidence in reaching a deal with Iran and criticizing Tehran for dishonesty in negotiations.
Efforts by mediators from Oman, Qatar, Pakistan, and Egypt to revive the June agreement have stalled amid disputes over control of the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions, and Iran’s nuclear ambitions amid ongoing hostilities.
