Investigators released two notes they believe were sent by the individuals who abducted Nancy Guthrie from her Tucson home in February. Despite efforts by federal and local law enforcement over nearly six months, Guthrie, mother of ‘Today’ show co-host Savannah Guthrie, remains missing.
The notes have been partially shared previously, but Friday marked their first full public release, aiming to generate leads in this high-profile case. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department unveiled the ransom notes sent to Guthrie’s family, stressing that the time to come forward is now, regardless of one’s relationship with suspects or the perceived insignificance of their information.
The first letter was delivered to TV station KOLD after Guthrie vanished on Feb. 1. Addressed to Savannah Guthrie, it demanded $4 million in bitcoin by 5 p.m. on Feb. 5, with a warning of an increase to $6 million if not paid by Feb. 9. The kidnappers vowed to hold Guthrie for a maximum of seven days.
If payment is not received by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5PM, she will be killed. Your mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands. It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible. You will not be able to contact me from here on out, there will be no negotiation. Do not play games, law enforcement will not be able to help you.
The FBI’s Phoenix office acknowledged some notes regarding the disappearance were potentially legitimate, while dismissing others as extortion attempts. They confirmed this case remains a kidnapping for ransom investigation.
The credibility of the note released Friday was strengthened by specific details, including references to a white smartwatch on the floor of Guthrie’s bedroom and a broken floodlight in the backyard. A second note, received as a news tip, claimed Guthrie likely died due to heart issues and was addressed to the entire Guthrie family.
