Milwaukee Brewers’ Dustin May Faces Injury After One-Pitch Game

A distressing event marked the start of a Major League Baseball game on Wednesday night when Milwaukee Brewers’ pitcher Dustin May exited after his first pitch.

May’s first delivery, a 95.8 mph sinker, directly struck him after being hit back at him by New York Mets center fielder A.J. Ewing. The ball traveled at 106 mph off Ewing’s bat before hitting May’s right shoulder. Although third baseman David Hamilton quickly fielded the ball and threw Ewing out at first, May was left kneeling in pain on the field.

The Associated Press reported that despite May’s attempts to continue by throwing several pitches, he was clearly in discomfort. He shook his right hand and raised his arm between throws, but eventually had to leave the game.

As May departed, his frustration was apparent, but fans acknowledged his efforts with applause. Robert Gasser replaced him on the mound to finish the inning.

This incident is reminiscent of Pablo Lopez’s single-pitch exit in July 2021, as mentioned by Jerry Beach from the Associated Press.

In a subsequent update, Zach Braziller with the New York Post reported that initial assessments suggested May’s injury was not severe. The Milwaukee Brewers later confirmed a right scapula contusion, and X-rays showed no fractures. Despite this, May is expected to experience lingering pain.

The Brewers, currently leading with an 81-51 record, aim for postseason success. With the playoffs approaching, it would benefit May to recuperate during September to ensure readiness.
