Firefighters Battle Fires in Southwestern France and Greece Amid Mass Evacuations

3 days ago 0

Firefighters in southwestern France contained a vast wildfire on Saturday, leading to the return of around 198,000 people following what could be France’s largest peacetime evacuation. However, renewed fires forced more evacuations both in France and Greece.

In France’s Mediterranean Var, a wildfire that seemed to have stopped leaped across 4 square miles in just six hours on Friday. This highlights the volatile situation where progress in firefighting can quickly change.

At the height of the fires, over a third of a million people were displaced in France and Spain. This stretched firefighting resources and emergency services to their limits.

Europe is warming faster than any other continent, as the European Union’s Copernicus climate service reports. This warming trend, alongside prolonged drought, is making vegetation more flammable, increasing the intensity and spread of fires.

Cap Ferret Remains Evacuated

The Gironde fire has razed 162 square miles of pine forest near Bordeaux, an area equivalent to four times the size of Paris. Firefighters reported it was still within its perimeter but not declared ‘fixed.’

Several communities are largely deserted, and the affluent Cap Ferret peninsula remains evacuated due to potential risks.

Lt. Col. Eric Pitault stated, ‘Today, the fire is still not fixed. It is contained.’

Firefighters conducted tactical burns overnight to eliminate vegetation ahead of the active fires. They faced 149 miles of fire edges with heat potentially buried underground, ready to reignite.

Allain Bougrain-Dubourg from France’s League for the Protection of Birds noted that millions of animals have been affected.

Fire Resurgence in Southern France

In the Var region, defensive lines around the Gros Bessillon fire held during the night. No extra ground was burned, and 2,500 people were still unable to return home, with around 1,300 firefighters deployed to handle the situation.

Temperature warnings were issued for twenty French departments, mainly in eastern and southeastern regions, with high forest-fire risks.

Gale-Force Winds Challenge Greek Firefighters

In Greece, firefighters defended Porto Germeno on the Gulf of Corinth from flames driven by gale-force winds. The fire began near Agios Vasileios, forcing sea evacuations and additional evacuations on Saturday.

‘A pristine forest, a paradise, surrendered to the fire,’ stated Minas Tzortzanis, a local farmer, highlighting the devastation.

The blaze has affected 15 to 19 square miles, according to Theodore Giannaros, a wildfire meteorologist. Nearly 500 firefighters, supported by water-dropping planes and helicopters, fought the fires.

New fires in Greece prompted evacuations around Nafpaktos, with strong winds creating challenging firefighting conditions. Minister Evangelos Tournas noted the wind’s intensity prevented some aircraft from collecting water effectively.
