Europe Battles Devastating Wildfires as Greece Helicopter Collision Highlights Danger

ATHENS, Greece — A tragic collision between two Greek firefighting helicopters has underscored the dangers faced by those tackling Europe’s wildfire emergency. The aircraft, engaged in battling a fierce wildfire west of Athens, collided midair on Sunday, leading to one crashing to the ground. The Greek fire department has confirmed that all four crew members were recovered, with two found safe and two unconscious. Further details regarding their condition are not yet available.

The collision highlights the perils on Europe’s most volatile wildfire front. Gale-force winds have intensified the flames in the Greek capital region, prompting new evacuations. The situation mirrors similar crises across Europe, with France containing blazes within vast burned areas, and Spain halting major fire advances.

In the Psatha area, west of Athens, the Bell helicopters involved had two-person crews. Authorities have not disclosed the nationalities of two foreign crew members. As flames rapidly spread through Western Attica, industrial districts faced threats, reminiscent of the deadly 2018 Mati wildfire that resulted in 104 fatalities, marking Europe’s worst blaze this century.

“A pristine forest, a paradise, was surrendered to the hands of the fire,” local farmer Minas Tzortzanis lamented Saturday.

Evolving Wildfire Threat Across Europe

The massive evacuations in France and Spain demonstrate Europe’s escalating wildfire threat. Entering 2026, the continent is recovering from its worst fire year on record, with over 10,000 square kilometers burned in 2025. The European Environment Agency reports that wildfires have claimed nearly 800 lives over four decades.

Europe is the fastest-warming continent, heating over twice the global average since the 1980s. Climate change driven by human activities has doubled the likelihood of extreme fire-weather conditions, according to World Weather Attribution scientists.

Escalating Challenges Near Athens

Near Athens, crews have deployed 23 aircraft and nearly 500 firefighters. Powerful winds have driven flames through parched forests and hindered efforts, preventing some aircraft from reaching the sea for water collection. Authorities evacuated several areas, including Kandili, Agia Skepi, and Toutouli, as smoke enveloped the mountains. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was briefed on operations.

The fire originated near Agios Vasileios and extended towards Porto Germeno and into forested mountains west of Athens. Emergency evacuations saw 254 people removed by sea on Friday, followed by 12 on Saturday when coastal roads were blocked.

Elsewhere in Greece, fires threatened homes in Kefalonia, leading to evacuations. Water-drops over the Ionian island and firefighting efforts in Halkidiki continue.

France’s Fires and Post-Fire Conditions

France’s Gironde megafire remains contained within its perimeter, yet continues to burn after devastating 420 square kilometers of forest over ten days. The region is under France’s highest red forest-fire alert, with concerns about potential flare-ups.

Mechanic Matthieu Plessis returned Saturday to find his family’s seven-generation-old home among 150 destroyed properties in Le Porge.

Additional firefighters from Ukraine, Lithuania, and French Polynesia are expected to support efforts.

In Provence, nearly 1,500 firefighters are engaged against the Gros Bessillon fire, which was stabilized but remains uncontained. Earlier fires in Var resulted in evacuations, including actor George Clooney and hundreds of residents.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu cautioned conditions remain volatile despite generally controlled fires. Reconstruction plans for devastated regions are underway.

Spain’s Situation and National Efforts

Spain witnessed major fires cease advancing on Sunday, in a season claiming at least 13 lives and provoking a national emergency. In Zamora province, crews protect fire perimeters and allow most evacuees home.
