Coby Bryant’s journey with the Chicago Bears has hit an unexpected hurdle. During a recent training camp session, Bryant was carted off the field following a knee injury.
The injury came as a shock to Bryant, especially after joining the Bears in the offseason on a three-year, $40 million contract. Last season, Bryant contributed to the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory, showcasing his abilities with seven interceptions during his rookie contract.
While the injury appeared serious at first glance, there is some positive news. Bryant’s diagnosis revealed a hyperextended knee, a bone bruise, and a small fracture. Fortunately, this won’t end his season. ESPN reports he will need to recover for eight to ten weeks.
“It always sucks to see,”
remarked Bears tight end Colston Loveland about Bryant’s condition. “You know, he’s tough, he’s a dog. He’s going to be fine.”
Loveland’s words reflect the resilience Bryant is known for, and the expectation is that he will approach rehabilitation with determination.
With Week 1 of the season five weeks away, Bryant might miss the opening games, but his return during the regular season is anticipated.
In Bryant’s absence, the Bears will rely on their depth chart. First-round draft pick Dillon Thieneman, from Oregon, is set to start alongside Bryant at free safety. Cam Lewis, another recent Bears addition, may transition from slot cornerback to safety, especially following an injury to Kyler Gordon.
This incident underscores the importance of depth in an NFL team’s roster. As the Bears continue their preparations, the focus will be on ensuring a strong defensive lineup until Bryant’s return.
