In the past, the teaching profession was seen as an appealing career choice. Alan Mather, reporting for The Hechinger Report, highlights a significant shift in this perception.
In the late 1990s, Mather, then an assistant principal in Chicago, witnessed high interest for teaching positions. A physics teaching position would attract around 20 applications. English teaching roles saw as many as 150 applicants.
However, as years progressed, this interest sharply declined. By the time Mather departed the district, filling these positions became increasingly challenging. Securing even one or two qualified candidates for the same roles was a rarity.
This trend indicates a broader issue in the education system. To address it, the teaching profession needs to be revisited and redefined as a valuable and rewarding career path to attract new talent.
