Kansas Woman Recovers from Severe Spider Bite Complications

A Kansas mother, Britagne Miller, is reportedly on the road to recovery after a suspected spider bite resulted in surgery, serious infections, and an extended hospital stay. The incident began on May 28 while Miller was with her family near Cheney Lake, about 14 miles west of Wichita. Local reports from KAKE and FOX Kansas indicate that several spiders crawled on her, potentially biting her.

Four days after the campfire outing, Miller noticed significant swelling and pain around a bite on her calf, prompting a visit to a medical facility. She described the sensation as severe and akin to being stabbed, with the pain shooting down her leg to her foot.

Following a hospital admission on June 4 at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Miller’s medical ordeal intensified. Complications arose due to underlying blood-clotting disorders, liver problems, and medication allergies. Additional infections developed, and doctors identified end-stage liver failure, warning her family about the potentially life-threatening situation.

Despite the severity, Miller chose to continue treatment, opting against hospice care. She has shared that her memories from the intensive care period are sparse.

She was discharged on July 11 and is now recuperating at home. Her recovery requires home health services, physical therapy, and ongoing visits with medical specialists. Miller aims to eventually receive a liver transplant, although she is not yet eligible for the transplant list.

As reported by KAKE, doctors have not confirmed the species of spider responsible for the bite. Dr. Raymond Cloyd, a horticultural entomologist at Kansas State University, noted the prevalence of venomous spiders like the brown recluse and black widow in Kansas. He advised taking preventive measures, such as sealing cracks and exercising caution with undisturbed objects like boxes and shoes.

In a GoFundMe set up by her husband, Jake Miller, the family expressed hope for Britagne’s future, emphasizing the desire to return to her loved roles as a mother and, one day, a grandmother.
