Rising Threat of Drug-Resistant Candida Auris in the U.S.

A drug-resistant fungus, which health officials label as an ‘urgent antimicrobial resistance threat’, has been detected in many U.S. states. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals the spread of Candida auris across nearly two dozen states this year.

The CDC’s latest figures indicate that as of the week ending July 25, 2026, Candida auris screenings were reported in 23 states. This fungus has reached every major region of the United States. Texas reported the highest number with 715 cases, followed by Michigan with 518 and Illinois with 379 cases.

Understanding Candida Auris

Candida auris is a yeast, a type of fungus that can lead to serious illness. Some strains are resistant to multiple medications, complicating treatment efforts. The fungus primarily spreads in hospitals or long-term care facilities. While healthy individuals generally do not fall ill, they may still transmit the fungus to others. First reported in the U.S. in 2016, it has quickly spread over recent years.

Current Spread of Candida Auris

In 2026, screenings for Candida auris have been recorded in states including Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, and Indiana, among others. While states like Arkansas and Montana have conducted screenings, no cumulative cases were reported.

Texas leads with 715 screenings, followed by Michigan with 518 and Illinois with 379. Ohio reported 218 cases. Other states with significant numbers include Nevada, New Jersey, Arizona, Maryland, and Virginia.

The CDC notes that surveillance figures are provisional and updates may occur as state and local health departments revise reports.

Between 2022 and 2024, a CDC review found that nearly 90% of clinical infections occurred in individuals aged 45 and older. Most patients were in acute healthcare settings, where the fungus spreads most easily. Health officials stress that rapid detection, screening programs, and infection-control measures in healthcare facilities are crucial to preventing its spread.

Symptoms of Candida Auris

The Cleveland Clinic states that symptoms of Candida auris infections vary by infection site. Common symptoms include:

• Chills
• Extreme tiredness
• Fever
• Low blood pressure
• Low body temperature
• High heart rate
• Ear pain or pressure

Many carrying the fungus may not show symptoms yet can still transmit it. Candida auris can spread from person to person and through contaminated surfaces. In healthcare settings, infections can also spread via contaminated medical equipment and devices like catheters, IVs, and breathing tubes.
