Progressive Candidates Face Crucial November Tests

Progressives have recently proven their ability to win Democratic primaries, but the upcoming November midterms present a larger challenge. Voters nationwide will decide key races in the Senate, House, and governorships.

El-Sayed’s Primary Win
Abdul El-Sayed, with support from influential progressives like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, secured the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat. He defeated Representative Haley Stevens, representing a contest between the party’s progressive and moderate factions. El-Sayed now faces Republican Mike Rogers, with the outcome indicating whether primary success can lead to general election victories.

The victory came after other progressive wins, including William Lawrence and Donavan McKinney in Michigan House primaries, Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania’s 3rd District, and Analilia Mejía in New Jersey’s special election. Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City mayor also stands out.
However, these candidates face varied political environments. Some run in safe Democratic districts, while others, like El-Sayed and Lawrence, navigate politically divided areas.

John Geer, a Vanderbilt University professor specializing in public opinion, noted the progressive strength and the challenge of appealing to independents and dissatisfied Republicans. On the other hand, progressive Cori Bush lost to Missouri Representative Wesley Bell, highlighting uncertainties about extending appeal beyond the party’s base.

El-Sayed’s November Test
To succeed in November, El-Sayed needs to unify Democrats after a divisive primary and attract independents in a state Trump previously won. Stevens expressed her support post-primary, despite a significant outside-spending campaign backing her during the race. The contest’s closeness is underscored by EPIC-MRA/MIRS polling and the RealClearPolling averages showing a tight race between Rogers and El-Sayed.

Geer suggested El-Sayed’s victory complicates Democrats’ chances but doesn’t make them impossible. Running a campaign focused on affordability and corruption, rather than ideological lines, could improve his prospects.

Other Progressive Challenges
Lawrence, co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, faces a competitive race against Republican Tom Barrett in Michigan’s 7th District, a pivotal race listed by the Cook Political Report. Trump narrowly won the district, and Barrett’s previous victory adds to the competitive landscape.

McKinney and Rabb will compete in Democratic-leaning districts. McKinney’s primary win in Michigan’s 13th District and Rabb’s nomination in Pennsylvania’s 3rd showcase potential strongholds.
Mejía’s prior victory in New Jersey demonstrated her ability to win a general election in a contest she secured about 60 percent of the vote.

The list of statewide progressive candidates may expand post-August 11 primaries. Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and Wisconsin’s Francesca Hong are contenders for Senate and gubernatorial nominations, respectively.
Until the results of these races unfold, Lawrence and El-Sayed’s campaigns are key indicators of the broader movement’s potential reach beyond traditionally Democratic areas.
