Child Hospitalized After Alligator Attack in Florida Nature Preserve

A young child was hospitalized in Florida after an alligator attacked while swimming in an off-limits area of a nature preserve. The incident occurred in Hernando County’s Weeki Wachee Preserve, as announced by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

The child, whose identity remains undisclosed, sustained puncture wounds to the arm and leg. Officials estimate the alligator to be between 9 and 12 feet in length. After the attack, the victim and companions became stranded on a sandbar, unable to return safely to shore.

Emergency services, including Hernando County Fire Rescue, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, responded at around 2:30 p.m. The Fire Rescue Special Operations Marine Unit used an airboat to reach and rescue the group, providing medical care to the injured child. The victim was then taken to Bayonet Point Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Christopher Gillette, owner of Bellowing Acres Animal Sanctuary, highlighted Florida’s population of approximately 1.3 million alligators and emphasized the importance of swimming only in designated areas to avoid such dangerous encounters.

“The primary issue here is swimming in prohibited zones,” said Gillette. “We’re fortunate the child survived.”

Gillette advised adhering to designated swimming areas to reduce risk. Common problems include swimming in alligator habitats, feeding alligators, or keeping children and pets near water edges. He explained how an alligator’s vision, just above water, might mistake a swimmer’s movements as prey.

Following the incident, a licensed Florida wildlife trapper set traps for the alligator as stated by the sheriff’s office. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the swimming violation.

The sheriff’s office urged the public to exercise caution around water and adhere to posted restrictions, warning against swimming in prohibited areas.
