Wisconsin State Rep. Francesca Hong Criticized for Holiday Comments

Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has become a leading figure in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. However, some of her past social media posts have sparked controversy regarding her views on American holidays.

In a November 2020 post, Hong suggested canceling Thanksgiving to stop celebrating colonialism, calling it the “original superspreader event” that harmed Indigenous peoples and women. She later retracted this comment, stating Thanksgiving is her favorite holiday.

Hong has also voiced her opinions on other American holidays. On Valentine’s Day 2022, she expressed frustration with the holiday, criticizing the societal pressure to express love in a capitalist framework. She mentioned missing restaurant work every day except on Valentine’s Day, due to the behavior of some customers.

Hong’s stance on traditional holidays like Independence Day and Columbus Day aligns with others on the political left, who question celebrations associated with historical injustices. Her 2019 post about Halloween indicated a dislike for the holiday, stating she would ask people in costumes to leave if she worked during that time.

Her aversion to fireworks was also highlighted in her social media activity. On July 5, 2020, she questioned the lack of a curfew on fireworks due to her personal dislike of them.

Republican commentator Steve Guest criticized Hong’s comments, suggesting her actions might alienate people. Yet, some individuals, such as Val Thomason, a Las Vegas DSA member, find humor in her remarks, describing it as character-driven.

Accusations of a “war on Christmas” have also surfaced, despite Hong celebrating Christmas in various posts. Conservatives often make this claim, while liberals dismiss it.

The Hong campaign did not provide a comment to Fox News Digital regarding the issue.
