Kevin Gausman Joins Cubs with World Series Ambitions

Kevin Gausman continues his pursuit with the Chicago Cubs, building upon his 14 major-league seasons. Last year, he reached the World Series with Toronto, starting in Game 6. However, the Blue Jays missed out against the Los Angeles Dodgers after failing to hold a 3-2 series lead and losing Game 7 in extra innings.

The Cubs acquired Gausman, expressing confidence in their roster and in the 35-year-old’s proven postseason experience. For Gausman, the ambition is clear: return to the World Series, this time with the Cubs.

“It’s an addicting feeling once you reach there,”

Gausman shared on Wednesday, reflecting on his previous experience. He described the heartbreak of losing but emphasized the joy and motivation of playing in such a prestigious event. His goal remains to get back there with the Cubs.

Managing the Cubs’ rotation presents a challenge for Craig Counsell as it transitions from a shortage to an abundance of pitching options. Gausman is set to debut for the Cubs on Friday night against the Kansas City Royals. Since facing his roughest outing on June 19 against the Cubs, he has a 6.47 ERA with 20 walks in 40 1/3 innings. Gausman is focused on consistency moving forward.

Gausman remarked on the importance of being an innings eater, stating, “That’s why they brought me here — to start games and go deep into games like I always have.” Cubs’ President of Baseball Operations, Jed Hoyer, noted Gausman as a long-time target since his early days in Baltimore, calling him their “white whale”.

Gausman looks forward to pitching with the Cubs’ strong defense supporting him at Kauffman Stadium. “It allows you to attack confidently,” Gausman explained, appreciating the reassurance of having defensive support.

Dansby Swanson, who played with Gausman in Atlanta, praised his composure and unique pitching style. Swanson highlighted Gausman’s consistency and ability to challenge hitters, emphasizing the pitcher’s adaptability and determination.

Swanson commended Gausman for overcoming challenges in his career: “He hit some bumps but stayed persistent, becoming an exceptional pitcher with numerous successes.” Gausman’s continuous battle through adversity is admired by his teammates.

For the Cubs, pitching depth has been a struggle, with no pitcher reaching the eighth inning this season. Gausman’s addition, alongside Clay Holmes, who pitches on Saturday, aims to alleviate the bullpen’s workload, especially with injury challenges.

Gausman, recently traded from the Blue Jays, reunited with former teammates at Wrigley Field. Reflecting on a past outing against the Cubs, he initially anticipated a ‘revenge game’ upon news of his trade. Instead, he aims to maintain the Cubs’ momentum as he takes the mound on Friday.

“I’ve been on teams where new additions provide a boost. Here, the team already feels strong, but I’m thrilled to contribute,” Gausman expressed.
