Murkowski Opposes Trump’s Attorney General Nominee Todd Blanche

Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, announced her opposition to President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, Todd Blanche, narrowing his path to confirmation.

In a statement shared on X, Murkowski expressed doubts about Blanche’s ability to check the administration’s impulses. She raised concerns about the immunity provided to the president and the politicization of the Department of Justice.

Murkowski was particularly critical of the anti-weaponization fund. Originally, the Trump administration suggested this fund would support those claiming government misconduct. However, Blanche rescinded this fund after its controversy, providing written assurance to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The fund, criticized by Murkowski for potentially rewarding January 6 protesters, was scrapped due to Blanche’s nomination process and Senate influence. Murkowski indicated uncertainty about future actions once the Senate casts its vote.

Beyond Murkowski, Senator Susan Collins from Maine also opposes Blanche. Blanche, acting Attorney General, has been engaging GOP senators to alleviate their concerns. He has traveled to Capitol Hill and Murkowski’s state to meet with leaders.

Blanche’s background as Trump’s personal attorney since 2023 is under scrutiny, particularly his role in defending Trump in legal challenges involving hush money payments, election results, and classified documents.

With all Democrats likely to oppose Blanche’s nomination, and Senator Mitch McConnell absent, Blanche requires full GOP support. The focus now shifts to Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who has voiced apprehensions about the administration post losing a nomination to a Trump-supported rival.
