Las Vegas Raiders star pass rusher Maxx Crosby has a knack for provoking opponents, regardless of the time or adversary. This trait was on display during a recent Raiders practice session in Henderson, Nevada, when he managed to aggravate quarterback Kirk Cousins.
During a team practice on Friday, Crosby struck Cousins’ arm twice, triggering a reaction from the otherwise calm quarterback. In response, Cousins confronted the defensive player, grabbing his jersey while exchanging some words. Teammates quickly intervened to diffuse the situation.
Despite the scuffle, Cousins stayed on the field to complete the drive with the first-team offense. However, Crosby was benched on the sidelines for the remainder of the period.
Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak remarked that such incidents are common in training camps. “Those are two leaders of our team going at it, so that is part of camp,” said Kubiak. He emphasized the need for players to maintain composure, especially during games, where physical altercations could lead to expulsion.
Raiders tight end Michael Mayer commended Cousins for showing toughness but cautioned against unnecessary aggression. “We don’t want to be throwing punches, but I think on any padded day of camp, there’s going to be some tussles,” said Mayer. He valued Cousins’ protective nature over his team but advised against risking penalties.
Even though the Raiders selected Fernando Mendoza as the No. 1 overall draft pick, they have appointed Cousins as the primary quarterback so far. Cousins has been receiving most of the first-team practice reps and is expected to start in the opening game against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1.
