Anthony Hopkins Releases Debut Album ‘Life Is a Dream’

Even Sir Anthony Hopkins experiences self-doubt at times. He recently spoke about his debut album, ‘Life Is a Dream.’ Reflecting on this project, he mentioned struggling with impostor syndrome, questioning if he truly created the compositions.

Despite these doubts, he completed a collection of 12 compositions, crafted over six decades. Conducted by Gustavo Dudamel and performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra, the album was recorded at London’s Alexandra Palace and is set to be released by Decca Records on August 21.

Hopkins’ Musical Journey

Hopkins, at 88, shared that music has always been his first love. Raised with postwar music, he started playing piano at four and wrote his first composition, a waltz, in 1960 at age 22. He explains that music offers him more freedom than acting, which requires discipline.

Before ‘Life Is a Dream,’ Hopkins composed scores for films like ‘Shadowlands’ (1993), ‘August’ (1996), ‘Slipstream’ (2007), and ‘Elyse’ (2020). His first adventure in music composition began with the opening of ‘Shadowlands.’

Childhood Inspirations

The album ‘Life Is a Dream’ draws from his childhood memories and experiences growing up in Wales. He describes it as a reflection of his adolescent years. There’s a tension in the album, which he attributes to the understanding that life is a long goodbye. The first single highlights this concept through a composition that evokes melancholy and nostalgia.

The song “Stella Aria,” named after his wife, Stella Hopkins, explores loneliness as well as the path to happiness. Hopkins has been reflecting on his life through his memoir, “We Did OK, Kid,” and his music.

Collaboration with Gustavo Dudamel

Actor Bradley Cooper played a surprising role in the album’s creation by connecting Hopkins with Dudamel. Cooper had witnessed Hopkins’ earlier work with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Dudamel praised Hopkins’ music, highlighting its emotional depth and storytelling quality.

Hopkins was deeply impressed by Dudamel, describing him as full of life, energy, and love. Dudamel shared his admiration in a statement, noting that Hopkins’ music reflects his storytelling ability and poetic instincts.

Future Performances

Following the release of his debut album, live performances are considered by Hopkins. Performing at Carnegie Hall is a personal dream, inspired by a film he watched in 1947. He recalls his mother’s words about performing at Carnegie Hall, marking it as another aspiration in his life.
