Pitcher Hagen Smith Makes Standout Major League Debut for Chicago White Sox

Chicago White Sox pitcher Hagen Smith took the mound for his major league debut against the Cleveland Guardians after a rain delay. Smith, who was drafted as the No. 5 pick in 2024, learned an hour into the delay that he would be playing. So he spent time staying active in the weight room to keep loose.

Smith pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three batters and allowing four walks with no hits given up. These efforts during the second and third innings contributed to a 5-3 victory, earning Smith his first major league win. ‘You always dream of this growing up,’ Smith remarked. ‘Doing it was really cool and a special moment.’

Smith and Tanner McDougal, another promising player, joined the Sox major-league roster following their call-up on Saturday. Pitching coach Zach Bove commented positively on their performances, saying, ‘Fresh, powerful arms coming out of the ’pen. That’s going to be good.’ Bove noted slight adjustments Smith made after returning from the injured list, particularly with a cutter and delivery changes.

In other team news, the Sox recently acquired veteran pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners. In his debut against the Boston Red Sox, Castillo allowed five runs on six hits over four innings, striking out five with one walk. Despite those runs, coach Bove expressed optimism, highlighting Castillo’s fastball and general performance. Castillo is set to pitch again on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds.

Bove also mentioned Castillo’s pitching strategy might include increasing changeup usage, especially against left-handed batters. ‘There’s definitely some adjustment, but we feel good about incorporating more changeups as Luis finds what works best for him,’ Bove explained.

Additionally, reliever Huascar Brazobán, acquired from the New York Mets, delivered a solid performance with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, utilizing his changeup and sinker effectively.

The White Sox aim to solidify their bullpen with Smith and McDougal, while David Sandlin and Noah Schultz have been sent to Triple-A Charlotte. Schultz, a high draft pick from 2022, has faced challenges during his rookie season. He has a record of 3-9 with a 6.60 ERA over 15 outings. Schultz’s development is ongoing, with coach Bove pointing out the need for conditioning to handle a full season’s workload.

‘Noah is part of our future. This time in Charlotte is a chance for him to reset and focus on development,’ Bove stated. The team remains hopeful about Schultz’s potential as he continues to gain experience.
