Jamal Adams, originally a first-round pick for the New York Jets, faced a new challenge at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Now with the Minnesota Vikings, Adams was competing for a roster spot but left the field in the first half of the Vikings’ 13-10 victory due to a knee injury.
While defending against New York Giants receiver Calvin Austin III, Adams suddenly sprinted across the field in the red zone. He then sustained a non-contact injury, collapsing onto the turf and requiring assistance. He was taken off the field on a cart to the Vikings’ locker room.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell commented on Adams’ condition during a brief in-game interview, describing the knee injury as “not good” upon initial inspection. O’Connell praised Adams’ enthusiasm and the strong impression he made on the team despite his recent arrival.
“You’re just crushed for him, the role he was paving for himself,” O’Connell said, acknowledging the impact Adams had brought in such a brief time.
The quick acknowledgment of Adams’ absence indicates the suspected severity of his injury. This incident is particularly unfortunate as Adams was performing remarkably, having made a critical stop during a Giants run play, demonstrating his skill at the linebacker position.
Adams had joined the Vikings shortly before training camp began on July 28. Entering his 10th NFL season, he was well aware of the competition for roster spots. His career started impressively with the Jets, earning Pro Bowl selections in 2018 and 2019 and securing a First Team All-Pro position in the latter year.
Following his successful run with the Jets, Adams was traded to the Seattle Seahawks. Later, he spent time with the Tennessee Titans, Detroit Lions, and finally the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025. During his time with Las Vegas, he transitioned from a safety role to linebacker, a change the Vikings had intended to maintain.
Adams, with his diverse skill set, considers himself a versatile player, akin to a defensive Swiss Army knife. Despite the current setback, he remains hopeful for a positive recovery, although non-contact knee injuries often pose significant challenges.
