Shannon Watts Criticizes Hasan Piker Over Past Comments

Shannon Watts, a political activist and advocate for gun control, has taken issue with Hasan Piker, a prominent progressive streamer. Watts accused Piker of downplaying his previous controversial statements in an attempt to minimize backlash.

“Hasan Piker defense Bingo card: ‘It’s a joke, satire, hyperbole. It’s out of context. It was years ago,'” Watts noted in her social media post.

Piker, who is known for his leftist views, responded, acknowledging the criticism while countering that Watts’ actions resemble those of a political operative for the GOP.

Fred Guttenberg Joins the Debate

Democratic activist Fred Guttenberg entered the conversation, rebuking Piker’s response to Watts. Guttenberg criticized Piker’s past comparisons of the NRA and AIPAC, labeling them as irrational.

“Using your MAGA styled attacks against someone like Shannon or me won’t work,” Guttenberg stated.

Democratic Concerns Over Online Rhetoric

The exchange between Watts and Piker highlights broader concerns among some Democrats about resurfacing comments from within the party. They point to incidents involving figures like Graham Platner and Abdul El-Sayed, where online posts led to political challenges.

Watts has expressed worries that ignoring candidates’ online pasts could harm their electability and trustworthiness.

Hasan Piker and Controversy

Piker’s past includes remarks that have drawn intense scrutiny. In 2019, he made a comment suggesting that “America deserved 9/11,” which he later walked back as inappropriate.

Recently, the University of Washington canceled an event with Piker, citing his past rhetoric on Israel. Piker responded by arguing for the importance of upholding First Amendment rights.

“We must fight back against the undemocratic & unamerican forces of Trumpism,” Piker wrote, advocating for the protection of free speech.

Watts countered Piker’s stance by pointing to instances where he appeared to support political oppression, such as his comments encouraging the arrest of Adam Schiff.

Calls for Political Accountability

Piker’s comments calling for the punishment of Democrats opposing Abdul El-Sayed sparked additional backlash. Critics questioned the sincerity of Piker’s claims that his past comments were merely jokes.

The ongoing debate raises questions about the role of past online rhetoric in defining the political landscape for influential figures.
