High-Rise Fire in Berlin Leads to Dramatic Rescue

A fierce fire broke out in an 18-story apartment building in Berlin’s Friedrichshain neighborhood, igniting around 6:30 a.m. local time on Friday. The blaze began on the 11th floor and quickly spread to the floor above, sending flames and thick black smoke pouring from multiple windows. Local police reported the situation as challenging and personnel-intensive, impacting many residents.

One woman escaped the inferno by climbing the building’s exterior. A video captures her precarious journey along a narrow window ledge on the 11th floor, with flames and smoke close by. Below her, a firefighter positioned in a turntable ladder’s rescue basket awaited. Despite several attempts to reach the apartment below, she struggled to find firm footing. Ultimately, she decided to leap into the firefighter’s basket, which caught her safely. Authorities confirmed the woman suffered minor injuries and received hospital care.

The fire incident affected 115 individuals, with 25 residents evacuated via fire-escape hoods and the turntable ladder. Thirteen people sustained minor injuries, necessitating emergency medical attention, and some were transported to nearby hospitals for further evaluation.

Authorities deployed 18 fire engines, two aerial ladder trucks, nine ambulances, and additional resources to combat the blaze and execute rescues. The fire’s origin remains under investigation.
