The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified, with new developments highlighting the strategic importance of military bases in the Indian Ocean. President Donald Trump has threatened to deploy ICE agents to US airports, sparking debates about DHS funding and airport security.
In a significant move, Iran targeted a joint US-UK military base in the Indian Ocean with intermediate-range ballistic missiles. This escalation showcases Iran’s military capabilities. The base, located on Diego Garcia in the southern Chagos Archipelago, has become central to US military logistics following an Iranian strike on a major US installation in Bahrain.
A Chagossian government-in-exile official noted Diego Garcia’s critical role in facilitating the Pentagon’s shifting logistics strategy. This allows US forces to avoid vulnerable coastal facilities but demands longer and slower maritime supply routes.
International lawyer James Tumbridge emphasized the base’s importance for regional security involving the US, UK, and allies. Tumbridge also voiced concerns about the proposed sovereignty transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, which could impact US military operations. The 2025 treaty between the UK and Mauritius grants Mauritian sovereignty but allows UK control of Diego Garcia for 99 years.
UK officials initially resisted allowing US offensive operations from Diego Garcia but later approved limited defensive measures against Iranian missiles. Recent events have demonstrated the strategic significance of these military installations in maintaining regional stability.
Iran recently fired two ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia. One missile failed during flight, while a US interceptor countered the second missile. British officials confirmed the interception, citing no serious concerns due to the missiles’ lack of range and targeting proficiency.
The US military’s logistical framework now trails a 2,200-mile maritime supply route to Diego Garcia. This shift comes as the USS Abraham Lincoln nears the end of its nine-month deployment in the region. The arrival of a new aircraft carrier will soon relieve it, as announced by President Trump at Joint Base Andrews.
