Matthew McConaughey recently met Pope Leo XIV in Italy, which has sparked political ambitions for the actor. During an interview with USA Today, McConaughey shared insights from his conversation with the Pope and discussed whether it influenced his thoughts on entering politics.
McConaughey, who identifies as politically centrist, had previously considered running for Texas governor in 2021. He has also voiced support for bipartisan gun-safety measures, especially after the 2022 Uvalde school shooting.
In the interview, McConaughey emphasized religion, saying, “Life is essentially a religious experience. There are many lessons on treating others and ourselves that we can learn from religious texts.” Despite believing in the separation of church and state, he argued that the values derived from religion should influence political systems.
He highlighted the potential for a universally agreeable constitution, stating, “There’s a lot of common ground that could be included in a constitution. I’m eager to see and perhaps contribute to such a document.”
McConaughey admitted he did not prepare extensively for the meeting with Pope Leo XIV. He wanted to discuss religion’s current role and why it’s appealing to the youth, who seek more from life than what they are currently getting.
During the meeting, McConaughey also discussed artificial intelligence, asking, “What standards should be set with AI? People are already viewing AI as a digital God. It will reflect humanity through the questions we pose and the results we seek.” He expressed hope for AI’s potential but also stressed the importance of caution to ensure AI remains a tool for humanity rather than the reverse.
McConaughey concluded by noting the private nature of many details shared between himself and the Pope, maintaining the confidentiality of their in-depth discussion.
