King Charles III faces criticism from Gavin Ashenden, a former chaplain and advisor to Queen Elizabeth, for allegedly straying from his role as ‘Defender of the Faith.’ Ashenden claims the monarch has not upheld his religious duties.
Changes in the Sovereign Grant Annual Report have fueled the controversy. The report, released in June, rephrased the title ‘Defender of the Faith.’ It now describes the King as ‘Supreme Governor of the Church of England’ and guardian of ‘Faith within the multi-faith nation.’
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams conveyed to Fox News Digital that this rewording has sparked significant debate. Fitzwilliams suggested retaining ‘Defender of the Faith’ alongside ‘Supreme Governor of the Church of England’ and then addressing Britain as a multi-faith society would have been preferable. He criticized the phrase ‘protects the space for Faith,’ calling it inadequate.
“Whoever wrote ‘protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation’ is no credit to the English language as this phrase is both weak and woke.”
Christopher Andersen, author of ‘Kate!,’ notes King Charles’s enduring interest in various religions. His views contrast with Queen Elizabeth, who remained steadfast in her Christian beliefs. Andersen shared that Charles has valued elements from Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism since his years at Cambridge in the 1970s.
The author explained that Charles aims for inclusivity. He desires a reign that welcomes diverse religious views, believing that no single religion holds all solutions.
Younger royals appear more uncertain about the ‘Defender of the Faith’ role. Andersen recalls Prince William questioning the relevance of religious affiliation while at Eton College. This incident might signal future changes once William and Kate assume leadership roles, indicating a potential phase-out of the title.
Royal commentator Ian Pelham Turner described Charles as a profound thinker regarding religion. However, he noted differences within the family, with William reportedly less interested in church matters, while Kate has recently confirmed her Christian beliefs.
Fitzwilliams warned against weakening the Church of England. He emphasized its unique position within European monarchies, noting Queen Elizabeth once likened the church to an inclusive umbrella supporting other faiths. According to Fitzwilliams, diminishing its role could harm both the monarchy and the nation’s spiritual heritage.
