Céline Dion’s Revelation About Long-Term Health Battle

2 hours ago 0

Céline Dion has shared insights into the hidden health battle she has faced for years, receiving a diagnosis that changed her life. The singer, aged 58, featured on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Global Icons issue, discussing her struggle with stiff-person syndrome, which went undiagnosed for over 17 years until August 2022.

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by severe muscle stiffness and unpredictable spasms. Dion’s symptoms often became so severe that they impacted her ability to walk, sometimes forcing her to rely on high doses of Valium.

Dion explains to Harper’s Bazaar, “It is a progressive condition; I don’t like to say ‘disease.'”

The singer admitted to feeling guilty for attributing canceled shows to minor illnesses while secretly coping with more serious health issues. As her symptoms worsened, particularly with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dion retreated from public life, fearing that fans might question her absence.

In December 2022, Dion publicly announced her SPS diagnosis via an emotional Instagram video, explaining that the spasms affect her daily life, hindering her ability to walk and sing. Following her diagnosis, she initially postponed European concerts and subsequently canceled the remainder of her 2023 and 2024 Courage World Tour dates.

Since then, Dion has focused on an intensive rehabilitation program to manage her condition and return to performing. This program includes medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy, as reported by Harper’s Bazaar.

Progress in her treatment allowed Dion to return to public life. In February 2024, she made her stage comeback at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, presenting Taylor Swift with the Album of the Year award. Over the summer, Dion promoted her documentary, “I Am: Céline Dion,” and made an appearance at its New York premiere.

Dion’s comeback continued with a performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, singing from the Eiffel Tower. In November 2024, she performed at Elie Saab’s 1001 Seasons fashion show in Riyadh.

Celebrating her 58th birthday, Dion announced she would headline a five-week residency in Paris starting next month. She expressed her excitement in a video, stating, “This year, I’m getting the best birthday gift of my life: the chance to perform for you again in Paris!”

Her recovery regimen includes 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice weekly, supplemented by ballet classes, as shared in Harper’s Bazaar. At the core of Dion’s return is her desire to reconnect with her fans, offering them something special as a testament to her journey back to the stage.
