Bryan Cranston expressed deep sorrow over the death of his Breaking Bad co-star RJ Mitte. Cranston planned to meet with Mitte, who was 34 at the time of his passing, for lunch a few weeks before Mitte took his own life.
In an emotionally charged Instagram post, Cranston shared memories of Mitte. As Walter White in the acclaimed series, Cranston played Mitte’s onscreen father. He remembered Mitte’s journey from a young teenager on the set to a skilled actor.
Cranston fondly recalled texting Mitte recently, arranging a lunch they never had. “I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future,” wrote Cranston.
Mitte’s representative confirmed his death to People and Variety, noting that he died by suicide. Cranston’s tribute continued with heartfelt recollections of nearly two decades of friendship with Mitte.
Cranston described his despair over losing the young actor he met when Mitte joined Breaking Bad at age 14. During the show’s run from 2008 to 2013, Cranston and co-star Anna Gunn offered guidance to the young actor.
Despite their advice, Cranston noted, Mitte was like any typical teenager. He reminisced about Mitte’s lack of acting experience when Breaking Bad began production in February 2007, highlighting how their professional relationship became a lasting friendship.
In his tribute, Cranston emphasized the significant impact the relationship had on him. “But I do know that I loved him,” he concluded.
Other Breaking Bad cast members paid homage to Mitte. Aaron Paul, known for his role as Jesse Pinkman, expressed his sadness: “RJ, I love you, my friend. You will be missed.” Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader, shared warm memories of Mitte and expressed his heartbreak.
Matt Jones, who played Badger, posted a photo on Instagram remembering Mitte as a “little brother.” These tributes underscore the strong bonds formed among the cast of the critically acclaimed series.
Outside of Breaking Bad, RJ Mitte built a varied career. He appeared in TV shows like Switched at Birth and films such as Dixieland and Westhampton. Mitte also worked in fashion and television coverage for the Rio 2016 Paralympics.
Mitte’s advocacy for disability representation was notable. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at three, he promoted inclusion and understanding in the entertainment industry. The condition affects movement and coordination due to developmental brain differences.
Mitte openly discussed his experiences, challenging stereotypes and encouraging greater acceptance. His contributions extend beyond acting, making a lasting impact.
