Evergreen Park Students Unveil Science-Themed Mural

1 hour ago 0

As students return to Evergreen Park Community High School, they are greeted by a new mural that beautifully merges art and science. During the summer, several students dedicated their time to this creative project, adding final touches recently.

Ava Chandler, a senior with a passion for both subjects, noticed the absence of science-themed murals in the school. Inspired, she proposed the idea to art teacher Tom Guerra, who supported the initiative along with other interested students.

“I’m a big fan of science and wanted to merge it with art to explore the origins of everything and the interconnections in scientific fields,” Chandler shared. The mural features various scientific symbols, including elements from the periodic table, depictions of Sir Isaac Newton, scientific equations, and the evolution from aquatic life to humans. Highlights also include a DNA helix, a dinosaur figure, and an asteroid.

Participating students found joy in attending school over the summer for this project. Juliana Bosch, a recent graduate now heading to DePaul University for character design, expressed her love for chemistry, “I enjoy learning how different substances interact and form the physical world.” Bosch emphasized their focus on detail and accuracy in the mural.

The project offered a bonding experience for the students, fostering teamwork and shared passion for art. “Working together on something we all love was wonderful,” Bosch added. This new mural will now enhance the school’s science wing.

Other contributors included Ava Chandler, Izabella Rodriguez-Acevedo, Jax Olson, Natalia Mosely, Danny Sommerio, and Wilbur Smith. The EPCHS Foundation funded the project with a grant, and industrial technology teacher Rob Rymek constructed the mural frame.

Art teacher Tom Guerra, an alumnus of the school, found the mural project a full-circle moment. As a former student, he participated in painting a mural celebrating reading and imagination. “Mentoring these students brought everything full circle for me,” Guerra stated, highlighting the emotional connection to the project.

Guerra also appreciated the opportunity for art students to receive recognition, often overshadowed by athletes. “This mural is a meaningful way to leave our mark and gain recognition,” he concluded.
