A recent incident in Norway highlights the importance of respecting wildlife in the Svalbard archipelago. A boater received a significant fine after deliberately using a ship’s horn to awaken a resting polar bear. This event occurred as the boat traveled through Lomfjorden in Svalbard.
Onlookers aboard the vessel observed the polar bear sleeping on land before an individual sounded the horn, prompting the bear to wake and move elsewhere. The actions were later reported to the governor by others on the boat.
Authorities concluded that the disturbance was intentional and imposed a fine of 50,000 Norwegian kroner (approximately $5,300) for breaching the Svalbard Environmental Act. The person involved accepted and paid this fine.
Polar bears in Svalbard enjoy stringent protections to prevent unnecessary disturbance or close encounters with humans.
Norway enhanced these protections in January 2025, mandating that individuals keep at least 300 meters (about 984 feet) away from the bears. This minimum distance increases to 500 meters (around 1,640 feet) during the period from March 1 to June 30, when bears are particularly vulnerable.
Norwegian law also bans unnecessary disturbance, attraction, or pursuit of polar bears. These regulations are critical in Svalbard, where wildlife encounters draw many visitors but require strict control to safeguard both animals and people.
In a similar event in 2024, a visitor faced a fine for approaching a walrus too closely on a floating ice sheet in Adventbukta. Reports from the public and witnesses led to a fine of 12,500 Norwegian kroner (around $1,300) for violating the Svalbard Environmental Act.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the need to maintain safe distances from wildlife to prevent disturbances and avoid potentially hazardous situations.
