Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed faces intense scrutiny due to his association with controversial figures. El-Sayed plans to attend a rally featuring Hasan Piker, a streamer known for controversial remarks, including the assertion that “America deserved 9/11” and comments justifying the October 7th attacks.
El-Sayed has also been questioned about his past statements regarding Ayatollah’s death in Dearborn and his position on defunding ICE. This has spurred discussions on cancel culture and border enforcement.
El-Sayed, scheduled to speak at the Islamic Society of North America’s (ISNA) annual convention during Labor Day weekend, will join a list of speakers including Muslim religious leaders with controversial histories. Baqir Berry, a cleric attending the convention, has been noted for his prayers supporting Islamist fighters in Palestine and Lebanon, asking for their victory.
Hassan Qazwini, also attending, has a history of statements that led to criticism, including remarks suggesting ISIS was connected to Israel. Despite past Holocaust-denialist remarks, Texas imam Yasir Qadhi, who later retracted those claims, will also be speaking. Siraj Wahhaj, linked to the 1993 World Trade Center terrorism case as a possible co-conspirator, though never charged, will appear as well.
Reports indicate that El-Sayed’s campaign received more than $100,000 from members of a group with alleged terrorism connections. The candidate’s past support for a pastor known for praising antisemitic figures has also come under fire. El-Sayed faces criticism for his association with Hasan Piker but has labeled Piker’s “deserved 9/11” remark as “dumb,” though he did not sever ties with him.
El-Sayed has defended a blog post comparing Donald Trump’s role in the January 6 Capitol riot to Osama bin Laden’s involvement in the September 11 attacks. In light of Republican scrutiny regarding his associations with politically and religiously polarizing individuals, El-Sayed’s campaign declined to comment when contacted by Fox News Digital.
