On Thursday, intense storms battered the Northeast U.S., causing significant damage and disturbances across the region. Long Island suffered particularly severe impact when a potential tornado swept through Atlantic Beach, demolishing parts of a well-known beach club.

Social media shared imagery capturing debris in the air and relentless rain at Atlantic Beach, situated on Long Island’s outer barrier. At the Sun and Surf Beach Club, numerous cabanas were damaged or destroyed. Despite the destruction, Inwood Fire Chief Josiyah Green confirmed no one required rescue from the site. Green remarked that luck played a role in preventing injuries given the club’s popularity during summer.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency due to flooding issues, particularly affecting the south shore. First responders were aiding individuals trapped in their vehicles. While the National Weather Service had issued warnings for waterspouts, it did not immediately verify tornado activity on the beach. Weather Service Meteorologist Bryan Ramsey noted that the storm was moving east and anticipated a decrease in intensity soon.

The Long Island Expressway in Queens was forced to close in both directions due to flooding. Images posted online showed cars halted as emergency workers navigated submerged roads.

In Dover, Delaware, a confirmed tornado struck the city, inflicting significant structural damage as reported by the local police. Thankfully, no injuries surfaced. Damage assessments indicated that sections of roofs at the Days Inn and Super Lodge were compromised, corroborating tornado activity. Fallen trees and disrupted power lines were widespread issues.

Kuimonie Goins, visiting from Greensboro, North Carolina, recounted her frightful experience at the Days Inn, where her family sought shelter in a bathroom as the storm escalated.

Power outages affected over 1,000 residents in Dover, as per the Delaware Electric Cooperative. Neighboring states like eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey faced flash flood warnings due to the ongoing severe weather.
