In a recent podcast appearance, Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed drew comparisons between his policy positions and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Speaking on the Progressive Christians Podcast in May, El-Sayed was asked about the influence of his Muslim faith on his political views and Senate campaign.
Podcast host Rev. Blair Stowe noted the parallels between progressive policies, such as Medicare for all and resistance to corporate money in politics, and Christian teachings. Stowe highlighted that these positions, which appear consistent with Christian values, are often labeled as ‘radical.’
“Jesus, peace and blessings be upon him, was considered radical in his time too,” El-Sayed responded. “There is a radical nature to standing forthright in a time of corruption. Popularity and zeitgeist don’t make truth.”
El-Sayed’s comments come amidst a heated campaign where he faces Rep. Haley Stevens, a contest with significant implications for Senate control. His nomination has caused discussions within the Democratic Party, challenging the establishment in Washington, D.C.
Republicans view Michigan as a critical battleground for maintaining their majority in the Senate. Former Rep. Mike Rogers, who narrowly lost a previous Senate bid, presents himself as a strong contender against El-Sayed.
Both candidates have invoked faith in their political strategies. In the media, El-Sayed has faced criticism from the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which questioned his fitness to represent Michigan due to his faith and past comments.
During another podcast appearance, El-Sayed addressed attacks on his Muslim faith. Host Jennifer Welch accused Rogers of being a ‘complete Christian hypocrite’ due to alleged associations with controversial church groups.
“He’s going to hide behind this simulacrum of faith,” El-Sayed said. “If you followed the teachings of Jesus Christ, it was about opposing the powerful and wealthy who subjugate others.”
