Deshaun Watson Faces Challenges Amidst Browns Fan Discontent

Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns fans have not been discreet in expressing their mutual dissatisfaction. As Watson competes with Shedeur Sanders for the starting quarterback position, he finds himself dealing with criticism from fans.

Browns supporters are displeased with Watson’s performance, noting his delivery of only 19 touchdown passes in 19 games despite his $230 million contract. His tenure with the team has been marked by a suspension and several injuries that kept him off the field.

Watson, despite being the quarterback, is not favored by the fans. In his first appearance at Huntington Bank Field since 2024, Watson was met with boos. Coach Todd Monken described the reaction as disheartening.

Watson acknowledged the animosity, stating, “It’s disrespectful.” He recalled how fans cheered when he suffered an Achilles injury, questioning the support from a city that reacted in such a manner. Watson tried to win over fans by staying involved with the community and working hard to return to the game, but it hasn’t earned him their affection.

Watson remarked, “It is what it is, and there’s only so much you can do to change that.”

The tension doesn’t end with the fans. Coach Monken will determine who wins the quarterback competition between Watson and Sanders, and performance is a key factor. Monken emphasized the importance of playing effective football to avoid negative reactions from fans.

In the recent game, Sanders showcased stronger performance statistics compared to Watson. Sanders completed 9 of 11 passes for 74 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, mainly playing with backup players. In contrast, Watson completed 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards and threw an interception, leading to more displeasure from the fans.

As Monken and the Browns’ leadership aim to select a starter soon, the decision remains uncertain. Watson joked he might feel like every game is an away game based on fan reactions should he secure the position. Meanwhile, Monken noted Sanders’ confidence and ability to play, absent of any boos from the fan base.
