The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has taken action against Kentucky’s organ donation network after a near-miss incident where a living patient almost had their organs harvested. Health safety has come under scrutiny again, highlighted by Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel. This follows Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s call for ethical reforms to ensure patient safety and regain public trust in the organ donation system.
In a separate incident, four patients undergoing routine joint replacement surgeries in Nashville reportedly received incorrect medication. Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown acknowledged that a pharmacy error resulted in patients being injected with potassium phosphate instead of the intended anesthetic. This led to serious health issues, including paralysis for one patient, as detailed by her family.
“The joint replacement went wonderful. Her knee is great. The rest of her is not,” shared Kristina Dorton about her mother-in-law, who is facing paralysis from the breastbone down due to the mix-up.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the incident after receiving a report from the Tennessee Healthcare Facilities Commission. Another patient claims paralysis due to the accidental injection, adding to the hospital’s woes.
Dr. Shubhada Jagasia, president and CEO of the hospital, offered a heartfelt apology to the affected patients and their relatives. The hospital has met with each family, providing emotional support and ensuring access to necessary resources. Steps have been taken to investigate the cause, with new safety measures in place to prevent future errors.
“Providing safe, high-quality care is at the core of everything we do,” stated Jagasia. The hospital’s clinical teams are now utilizing enhanced safety protocols to ensure patients’ safety. Despite these efforts, recovery remains uncertain for some.
“This is life-changing. You don’t come out of this without some type of life-altering, catastrophic deficit,” Dorton stated, hoping for specialized help for her relative. “Time is of the essence here for recovery,” she emphasized.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the hospital for additional comments. Meanwhile, the affected families continue to seek solutions, aiming for the best possible outcomes for their loved ones.
