Independence High School was prepared to kick off its football season against rival Centennial High. The evening ended in tragedy. A gang-related shooting took the life of Levi Brown, a 17-year-old student-athlete, within the stadium gates. Bakersfield police confirmed the incident.
Brown, a football player for Independence High, was mourned by coach Vince Carter on Facebook. Carter noted that Brown was “around the wrong crowd and was getting misled and misguided.” He expressed sorrow for how Brown’s life ended. At this time, it is unconfirmed whether Brown played on the junior varsity or varsity team.
The shooting erupted around 8 p.m. after an argument as the varsity team was taking the field. This was reported by the team’s Instagram account. Gunshots caused panic among attendees. Video from KBAK/KBFX showed players and spectators fleeing. Responding officers took Brown to Kern Medical, where he was pronounced dead.
Officer Eric Celedon addressed the community at a news conference saying, “We know that families look forward to coming out every Friday night to watch their kids play. This was an isolated incident, and we want to reinforce that school games in Bakersfield remain safe.” Despite reassurances, the shooting left the community shaken.
“As a father who worked for the Kern high school district as a security guard, the district and the high school need to put a plan in place to prevent this from happening again,” a concerned parent wrote on Facebook. “We need to hold the school district accountable for this incident.”
The police arrested a 15-year-old suspect on Saturday in connection with the shooting. His status as a student at Independence High remains unclear. “Our hearts are with the family of the 17-year-old who lost his life, and all those impacted by this tragedy,” the police department stated on X. “We have a strong community. That strength will carry us forward.”
Brown is survived by a 1-year-old daughter. Coach Carter informed the California Post of this loss. “Levi had crazy potential, and I always believed in him,” Carter expressed on Facebook. “Get your rest, kid. I’ll always remember the last 7v7 you played and said, ‘Coach, thank you for believing in me.’ Always did and always will.”
A related incident occurred Saturday at Los Angeles Southwest College in San Pedro. A loud noise caused a stampede in the stadium. Police confirmed to ABC7 that no shooting actually took place.
