US Urged to Lead in AI to Secure Economic Future Against China

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum highlighted the importance of winning the artificial intelligence (AI) race against China. His comments follow President Donald Trump’s promotion of data center jobs and tax revenue. A recent Fox News poll indicates a divided public opinion on expanding local data centers.

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania dismissed predictions of AI leading to negative outcomes. He cautioned that such fears benefit China in the global AI competition. Fetterman shared an article on Bloomberg suggesting a reduction in the U.S. lead in AI over China. It also noted China’s rapid deployment of advanced models.

Fetterman emphasized AI’s significance for national security. He warned that stepping back in technology development aids competitors. “China gains from our overreaction,” he wrote, stressing the need to move forward with AI and avoid public panic.

Earlier statements from Fetterman aligned with President Trump on advancing AI and expanding data center infrastructure. In response to Senator Bernie Sanders’ suggestion of an AI development pause, Fetterman argued that this would benefit China. “America must lead in AI, or face living under China’s rules,” he stated.

Fetterman has consistently supported building more data centers in the U.S. In March, he opposed any moratorium on new AI data centers. He criticized such proposals as favoring China’s position.

In recent remarks, President Trump encouraged local leaders to support the construction of AI data centers. He noted the substantial job creation and tax income these facilities generate. “The construction jobs are enormous,” Trump said. He added that AI data centers would significantly boost local economies.

Despite public concerns about data centers, Trump announced an executive order in July to streamline permits for their construction. A Gallup poll revealed public opposition due to environmental concerns, such as water and electricity consumption.

Trump addressed the necessity for regulation in AI, proposing a balance between leadership and sensible oversight. He described AI as potentially larger than the internet, highlighting the U.S.’s current lead.
